Action Canada for Population and Development

Through dialogue, education, advocacy and coalition building, Action Canada for Population and Development (ACPD) is the only Canadian NGO that promotes the full implementation of the Programme of Action stemming from the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). ACPD works with non-governmental organizations throughout the world that share its goals and principles to promote public policy discussion on population and development issues. ACPD plays an active role in international meetings and forums aimed at advancing the ICPD agenda.

ACPD engages in policy development and dialogue in three primary issue areas:

  • sexual and reproductive rights;
  • population and the environment; and,
  • population, migration and development.

ACPD's report Towards Greater of HIV/AIDS & Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights is informed by a policy dialogue process that ACPD facilitated between September 2004 and May 2005 on the issue of greater integration of HIV/AIDS and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). The paper is also informed by ACPD’s attendance at the International AIDS Conference in Bangkok, Thailand (July 2004) and an NGO Global Roundtable in London (August 2004) to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the ICPD.

Their website gives a good summary of why it is important to invest in sexual and reproductive health and rights.
